Kathy and Olivia, A Mother's Struggle with Her 17-year-old's Aphasia from a Brain Injury

Kathy is the mother of 17-year-old Olivia, who sustained a brain injury seven months prior to the video. Olivia fell off a golf cart, hitting her head, which resulted in surgery, a coma, and global aphasia.

Before the injury, Olivia was an outgoing teenager who enjoyed spending time with friends, going to football games, and listening to music. After the injury, her life drastically changed; she could no longer participate in these activities, and many friends stopped coming around. Kathy emphasizes that while Olivia's happiness and motivation remain, her ability to engage in typical teenage activities and communicate as she used to is gone. The family dynamic has also shifted, with Kathy now needing to constantly be with Olivia to help her communicate and prevent embarrassment. Kathy expresses that she initially thought aphasia would resolve with healing but learned it's a long-term struggle requiring intensive therapy. She explains that traditional therapy often used tools not relevant to everyday life, leading to a loss of hope for Olivia's recovery.
